The area has a sub-tropical climate with wet and dry seasons. The area is a major tourist destination, with premier tourist attraction Katherine Gorge National park (Nitmiluk), along with Gregory, Mataranka and Elsey National Park, Edith Falls and Cutta Cutta caves.

Katherine is a hub for tourists exploring the region primarily in the peak dry season and boasts a modern shopping complex, tourist information centre, a cinema, modern motels, hotels, restaurants and cafes.
